Designing a Business Profile
TagSonar was an online directory company for local trade services in Boise, ID. I was hired to design the business profile screen that customers could hire their services from, as well as start a style guide.
This project never launched, because the owner changed the business model of the company. This meant that my designs were no longer required.
Empathizing with People who Hire Professional Services Online
I was told by the client that the average user hiring the services of local businesses in Boise, ID, was a female home owner. I carried out a competitor analysis of online directory companies like Yelp, Thumbtack, Google Business Profile, and Houzz. Please see the competitor analysis here for both the mobile and desktop websites of each of these companies: Competitor Analysis
The main takeaways from the competitor analysis:
-
Using verification, achievement, and skill badges on the business profile signal to prospective customers that their company is trustworthy and professional
-
The CTA button should be visible at all times while scrolling on the screen
-
All of the most important information about the company should appear above the fold
Ideating and Prototyping the Business Profile Screen
Inspired by the competition out there, I drew an initial sketch of a business profile that I thought would work well with the rest of the TagSonar brand and product, as well as meet the Jakob Nielsen’s 10 heuristics for user interface design. Please see here the initial sketch.
Creating the Style Guide
The client wanted me to start a style guide that could be referred and added to at a future point. Please see this here: style guide.

What did I Learn from doing this Project?
Due to the project being cut short, the business profile screens are limited in their interactivity. Furthermore, if I had more time to work on this project, I probably would’ve designed a modal for both mobile and desktop that would appear after a user tapped or clicked on the button ‘Write a Review.’ I also would’ve advised the client that the business profile screen would need to be tested with users to determine whether there were any usability issues with it.
